Extra Care Housing for older people

Topping out ceremony Hazelhurst Court

It was fantastic to be part of the topping out ceremony for Hazelhurst Court - the first extra care scheme to be developed by Phoenix Community Housing. Lewisham Council is supporting the scheme through £2.1 million in Section 106 funding.

The aims of the scheme are to provide good quality accommodation to older people with care and support needs whilst enabling downsizing to free up family sized housing for those in housing need.

There will be 24/7 staff presence for the 58 one bed flats and 2 x 2 bed self contained flats. Shared facilities include ground floor catering kitchen, dining area and living space plus multi-use rooms and assisted bathroom. Completion is expected in the Spring of 2017.

Integration of health and social care

Health and Care devolution in Lewisham

We continue to work closely with Lewisham's Clinical Commissioning Group and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust to develop our integration programme.

Our ambition is that by 2018 we will have joined up and coordinated health and social care services for all adults.

What is needed is a strategic view and a look to the future demands with the integration of services. Labour is committed to limiting the use of the private market in the NHS. In integrating health and social care into one system we must ensure we remove duplication and get better value for the money. We must ensure that personalisation really means treating everyone as an individual and not part of the process.

Lewisham aims to create “One Lewisham Health and Social Care system” by combining mental and physical health services and social care.

Victory for Lewisham Council in saving services

Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt’s decision to press ahead with the downgrade of Lewisham Hospital’s maternity and emergency services was a kick in the stomach for Lewisham’s community. The plans were roundly rejected by local people, by the staff who work in the hospital and by local GPs.

On the 1 October 2013 Lewisham Hospital was merged to become the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Trust provides services for local people in Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and other parts of South East London.

I am a member of Lewisham's Health and Well Being Board and will continue to work closely with the LGT to ensure that the financial support needed for QEH is not at a cost to Lewisham's services.
