Transport improvements

Sydenham Road improvements

With backing from Transport for London (TfL), Lewisham Council has developed plans to enhance Sydenham Road and Kirkdale, from Cobbs Corner to Mayow Road.

The funding of £3.6 million will improve the look of the high street and create a better environment for pedestrians and shoppers without affecting the traffic flow.

Full details of the scheme can be found on Lewisham's web site - http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/inmyarea/regeneration/sydenham-forest-hill/sydenham-high-street/Pages/sydenham-high-street.aspx

Lewisham Council also intends to spend £300,000 to upgrade Station Approach - the land is in the process of being transferred from LOROL.

60+ Oyster Card

Operational from 1 November 2012

The good news is that Londoners aged 60 or over whose main residence is in a London borough and who are not yet eligible to receive a Freedom Pass will be able to use the 60+ Oyster photocard to travel for free on all TfL services at any time of the day. That includes London buses and Underground, Tram, Docklands Light Railway, Overground (the orange line on underground maps comprising the previous north and east London lines) and certain National Rail services in London.

It will also give a discount on some river services such as Thames Clippers from the London Eye to the O2 Arena and Woolwich Arsenal, and cruises to Greenwich and Hampton Court.

Eligibility for the Freedom Pass has been rising in line with the state pension age for women by one month, every two months, which means, for example, that someone turning 60 on 6 October will not be eligible for their pass until May 2015.

Boris Johnson had delivered on his pledge set out in the May manifesto to provide Londoners with free travel on the capital's transport network from their 60th birthday. .

East London Line

ELL arrives on time

After many years of campaigning we are delighted with the opening of the East London Line bringing a new air-conditioned Overground service to Sydenham - and putting us on the tube map. Sydenham now has eight Overground trains an hour to and from Dalston Junction, alongside four Network Rail trains to London Bridge - with six in the morning peak. The benefits of this fast, frequent,air-conditioned, accessible service include the audio and visual announcements

This new line is dubbed the Culture Line as there are ten museums and galleries along the line - please visit www.cultureline.org.uk/ for more information.

Freedom Pass Renewal

The good news is that the Freedom Pass will not be valied for five years but make sure you complete the renewal. Don't forget to take two new passport sized photos as the photo will now appear on the card.

The concessionary travel that was opened up last year allowed anyone holding a free travel pass to use buses for free anywhere in the country. Local Councils have to cover the cost of the subsidy and were given an extra payment from Government to cover this. Given the variation of use in the country the Government is currently looking at how to redistribute this extra money more fairly.
